The Wood Green Parish has a long standing history of advocating for and investing in the education of children within our local areas. Clergy are heavily involved in supporting and leading the worship within both the affiliated schools both on site and in our parish churches, as well as exercising roles in governance, pastoral care and Christian education.
St Michael’s CE Primary School
Add the following paragraph under the above title “There has been a church school attached to St Michael’s Church in Wood Green since 1859. In the original building up to 80 children were able to receive free education. In the school students were both given Christian education and taught the importance of prayer, a principle that remains at the heart of the school to this day. As the population of Wood Green began to rapidly expand, so to did the demand upon the school for its services to education. In 1863 the original site was expanded so as to accommodate both boys, girls and infants in a day school. However, the demand become so great that St Michael’s was forced to focus solely on the teaching of infants.
In 1872, following the passing of the Elementary Education Act (1870), an expansion of the School was made possible through the charitable donations of parishioners and the Diocese of London. A foundation stone was laid to mark the schools ability to now educate up to 150 boys and 150 girls. Only 14 years later further donations from the parish were given to further and improve the education and site for the infants. The school would continue to use this site until it became necessary to demolish the original Edwardian buildings and rebuild the school on the original site. Fundraising efforts began in earnest in 1950, but the first stage of this project was not undertaken until 1966 which saw the construction of the new classrooms. Further classrooms and an administration block were completed 2 years later and the work was dedicated by the Rt Reverand Graham Leonard, Bishop of Willesden on 20th June 1968, before the kitchens were built and opened by the Duke of Gloucester in 1972.
In 2013 the St Michael’s Church of England School became an Academy as one of the founding schools in the LDBS Academies Trust, and has recently celebrated an OUTSTANDING Ofsted Inspection across all areas. The parish continues to remain committed to furthering the Christian worship and education of its students.
St Michael-at-Bowes CE Junior School
The history of St Michael-at-Bowes CE Junior School stretches back to before the turn of the twentieth century. In 1866 the Kiln Lane National School was established but would be replaced in 1896 by St Michael's National School, which opened on the site of the current school in Tottenhall Road, by the Rev. A. C. Almach and the Hon. William Frederick Danvers Smith MP on 23rd November. Originally a day school, St Michael’s National School was able to accommodate 377 children across two sites, with the aim of providing a source for Christian education for the children in the parish of St Michael-at-Bowes.
The school would continue to make use of the original Georgian and Edwardian buildings until the 1970’s when the London Diocesan Board for Schools purchased the surrounding land and made plans on renovating the existing sites. By 1972 the work on the new site was completed and St Michael’s National School was reopened by the Rt Rev. Alan Rodgers, Bishop of Edmonton on 24th March, renamed as St Michael-at-Bowes Church of England Junior School. The site was expanded again in 2004 so that it could more effectively serve the educational needs of the children in a diversifying and growing community. Today there is a deep relationship between the parish and St Michael-at-Bowes CE Junior School. Whether its leading the worship, supporting the Christian education or offering pastoral care to students and staff, the parish is deeply committed in its relationship with to this school, as it has been for almost 130 years.”
